Explore the Habitat of the Resplendent Quetzal on the Los Quetzales Trail

The Los Quetzales trail unites the two communities of Boquete and Cerro Punta and is one of Panama’s most visited and popular hikes, named for a particular species of bird called the Resplendent Quetzal. Quite elusive, these birds are a magnificent and rare treat to observe and are a favorite among many birding enthusiasts. In addition to the Quetzal, there are more than 220 other bird species native to the area.

From Boquete to Cerro Punta, the 10 km trail climbs steadily (roughly 2500 vertical feet) as you pass from tropical rain forest to tropical cloud forest and takes approximately 4-6 hours to complete. Once you arrive at the ANAM station (park entrance / exit) in Cerro Punta, you will descend down into town where you’ll board a bus back to David and from there, back to Boquete. All transportation costs and park entrance fees, as well as lunch and a guide are included in your trip cost. If, however, you prefer private transportation back from Cerro Punta to Boquete we can send a vehicle to collect you for an additional fee. Or if you have any concerns whatsoever about your ability to complete the hike, you may consider beginning the hike in Cerro Punta and descending to Boquete or simply hiking a shorter section of trail. There are many different options for customizing this hike to your specific needs and desires, and we are very flexible and willing to customize this day trip for you! Just tell us what you want!

And if you think that a single day just isn’t enough time to linger with the wildlife on the Los Q, we agree and offer this trip as an overnighter. Please be advised that you may be camping at roughly 1300 meters (approximately 4400 feet) in cloud forest and need to bring warm clothing and a rain jacket if you have one.
